Wondering how to choose your career path at this moment?Read more from Richard Cho, managing director at Cesna USA of the special column called "Moso Bamboo".[KOCHAM 칼럼] ‘모소 대나무’(Moso Bamboo) (CESNA GROUP INC 미주법인장 조재원)현재 북미 전역에서 취업 및 구직을 희망하는 분들께 도움을 주는 리크루팅 펌에서 근무를 하다 보니 다양한 사람들이 왜 이직을 하려고 하는지, 그리고 그들의 지금까지의 인생사를 자연스럽게 듣게 된다.우리가 가지고 있는 모든 정보를 동원해 그들이 더 좋은 더 나은 선택을 할 수 있도록 최선을 다하고 있으나, 구직자 중에는 1년 미만 단위로 연락을 주는 이들도 있는데 대부분 스스로가 몸담은 분야에서의 발전 가능성이 보이질 않아 서둘러 다른 분야로의 도전을 시도하는 후보자들이다. 물론 급속도로 발전해 나가는 요즘 세상에 산업분야에 따라 짧은 기간에 일찌감치 만족스러운 결과를 내는 사람들도 있고, 새로운 분야와 환경으로 도전해 성공하는 이들도 다수 있다. 그러므로 그 도전은 용기 있는 행동으로 박수쳐 주고 칭찬해줘야 마땅하지만, 그 빈도가 잦을 경우 작게는 본인의 경력에 크게는 자신의 인생에 마이너스가 될 수밖에 없다.새로운 환경에서 사계절이 지나지도 않은 시점에서 괄목할 만한 성과를 내지 못했다고 본인 스스로 좌절하고 실망해서 쉽게 포기하는 이들은 다른 어떤 환경에서도 똑같은 기준으로 기대와 실망을 하면서 똑같은 결과를 맞이하고 또 다른 길을 찾으려고 할 것이다.이에 필자는 항상 이러한 후보자들에게 다른 곳으로의 이직을 권하기보다는 조금 더 시간을 가지고 몸담은 조직과 환경에서 자기 계발에 시간을 좀 더 투자하고 노력이 필요하다는 조언을 마다하지 않는다.세대를 막론하고 수많은 이와 비슷한 경험과 상황에 놓인 후보자들을 만나고 그들의 이야기도 들어주고 내가 할 수 있는 조언을 해주고 싶지만 그러기에는 어려움이 많으므로 이 기고문을 통해 꼭 전해주고 싶은 이야기가 있다. 바로 ‘모소 대나무’(Moso bamboo) 이야기다.중국 극동지방에는 ‘모소 대나무’ 라는 희귀종 대나무가 있다고 한다. 이 대나무는 씨를 뿌려도 몇 년 동안 거의 자라지 않는다. 4년여 동안 끈기와 인내로 정성껏 돌봐야 겨우 3cm 정도 자랄 뿐이다. 하지만 씨를 뿌린 지 5년이 지나면 놀라운 일이 벌어진다. 그동안 꼼짝도 하지 않던 대나무들이 하루에 30cm 이상씩 자라기 시작해 6주 만에 무려 15m 이상의 높이로 성장하는 것이다.아무것도 없던 땅은 금세 하늘로 곧게 뻗은 빽빽한 모소 대나무의 숲으로 변하게 된다. 4년 동안 거의 죽어있던 나무가 어떻게 한순간에 울창한 숲을 이룰 수 있는 것일까. 이렇게 폭증적인 성장이 가능한 이유는 성장이 겉으로 드러나지 않는 4년 동안, 대나무는 땅 밑에서 길고 넓게 뿌리를 뻗으며 기반을 단단하게 다져 놓았기 때문이다. 그리고 모소 대나무의 성장방식을 잘 알고 있는 농부들은 그 대나무가 어떻게 자랄지 이미 알고 있기 때문에 지금 당장 큰 성장이 없어도 꾸준히 물과 양분을 주며 가꿀 수 있었던 것이다.당장 눈앞에 결과가 보이지 않는다고 실망하지 않고 더 크게 성장하기 위한 때를 기다리며 준비하는 모소 대나무, 그에 비해 우리는 결과나 성과에 너무 의존해 내면의 뿌리를 내리는 데 소홀하지는 않았는지 우리의 모습을 되돌아볼 필요가 있다.급변하는 세상이지만 우리 모두가 여기저기 부는 바람에도 쉽게 흔들리는 것보다 우직하게 자신이 생각하는 신념을 지키도록 노력하고 끝까지 기다리며 기본을 다져간다면 아마 우리도 5년차 모소 대나무처럼 누군가에게 희망을 줄 수 있는 대나무 숲이 되어 하늘 높이 솟아 있을 것이다.미주중앙일보 KOCHAM칼럼 해당기사 바로가기Moso Bamboo -Wondering how to choose your career path at this moment?As I work at a recruiting firm that helps those who want to find employment and find a job across North America, I naturally hear why various people want to change jobs and their life history so far.We are doing our best to use all the information we have to help them make better choices, but some job seekers contact us every less than a year, and most of them are candidates who rush to challenge other fields because they do not see the potential for development in the field they have worked in. Of course, in today's rapidly developing world, some people produce satisfactory results early in a short period of time depending on the industrial field, and many people succeed by challenging new fields and environments. Therefore, the challenge deserves applause and praise for its courageous actions, but if it is frequent, it is bound to be a negative factor in one's life in a small way.Those who easily give up because they are frustrated and disappointed that they have not achieved remarkable results in less than four seasons in the new environment will face the same results and try to find another way, expecting and disappointed with the same standards in any other environment.Therefore, I always advise these candidates that they need to invest more time and effort in self-development in organizations and environments where they have worked with a little more time rather than suggesting that they move to other places.I want to meet candidates who are in many similar experiences and situations regardless of generation, listen to their stories, and give them advice, but there are many difficulties to do so, so there is a story I want to tell you through this article. It is the story of "Moso bamboos."It is said that there is a rare type of bamboo called Moso bamboo in the Far East of China. It rarely grows for several years even when seed is sown. It will only grow about 3 centimeters long after taking care of it with patience and perseverance for about four years. However, five years after sowing, something surprising happens. Bamboo that had not moved will begin to grow more than 30 centimeters a day, and will grow to a height of 15 meters or more in just six weeks.The ground that had nothing quickly turns into a dense forest of Moso bamboo that stretches straight into the sky. How can a tree that has been almost dead for four years form a dense forest in an instant? The reason for this rapid growth is that bamboo has been firmly established by extending its roots long and wide under the ground during the four years when growth is not visible.
